Cornelius “The Commodore” Vanderbilt

Cornelius Vanderbilt is an American business magnate of Dutch origin who built his wealth through railroads and shipping during the 1800s. After working with his father's business, Vanderbilt worked his way into leadership positions in the inland water trade and invested in the rapidly growing railroad industry. Nicknamed "The Commodore", he is known for owning the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Further, he similarly controlled the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad, the Lake Erie and Western Railroad, the Pittsburgh Railroad, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad as well as Canada Southern and many others.

Cornelius Vanderbilt’s railroad empire was vast. He greatly improved and expanded the nation's transportation infrastructure, contributing to a transformation of the very geography of the United States. He embraced new technologies and new forms of business organization. Similarly, Cornelius Vanderbilt was meticulous in running his empire. He helped to create the corporate economy that would define the United States in the 21st century.

When he died in 1877, he left a fortune worth $100 million USD, the largest at the time. Ultimately, if he were alive today, Cornelius Vanderbilt would be the wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of over $215 billion USD. The Vanderbilt University was founded in his honor and his descendants characterized America’s Gilded Age. They were the elite and the powerful, owning many businesses and involved in finance.
